Mental Health in Sports

Team Sports and Solo Sports

The stress and pressures of participants in sports go beyond the physical health that is widely focused on through daily training, rehabilitation, and competition. Mental health is equally important and significantly benefited as well through exercise. However, athletes that receive much of their necessary physical activity are not immune to conditions that alter mental health. Research has indicated that there are advantages and disadvantages to mental health depending on the specific group of sports. These can be divided into two groups: team sports and solo sports.

MOVING BEYOND THE STIGMA

Research in a Current Issue

Fitness

In tackling mental health as a global issue, it must be acknowledged that there are many stigmas that stand in the way of making progress in the sports industry.  There is the belief that athletes are tough and the pressures and stress of competing can be surpassed with hard work and dedication. However, sports participants have been easily overlooked with this message to sacrifice for the love of the sport.

Like all people, participants need to take the time to care for their mental health and be comfortable with seeking help and finding a support network. A conversation on mental illness is sometimes more difficult to have than physical injuries. There is nothing to detect fairly external as there are with physical conditions. In a world where showing emotional struggles is regarded as mental weakness or lacking machismo, eliminating the stigma can be a step to pushing for treatment and open discussions. We will see how different aspects of team sports and individual sports reveal themself in the following research.
